not scratch resistant Feb 20, 2011
By Mark I struggled a bit with what overall rating to give. I own two bianci tungsten watches (9063M and 5837M). Both are absolutely beautiful, have a nice shine, and receive fairly regular compliments. Great looking designs.
On the other hand they both have the same severe issue: these watches are NOT made from high quality tungsten carbide (you know, the material with a hardness of 8.5 - 9.0 on the mohs scale, where diamond is a 10). Tungsten carbide should be highly scratch resistant. But wiping away a smudge with the corner of a soft cotton t-shirt will leave small to medium scratches on these watches. You can basically only clean them using the same kind of microfiber cloth and solution that you might clean eyeglasses with.
The watches are made in china, and the overall quality is consistent with that. Besides the scratches, one watch had a dead battery within 3 months of purchase , and the other watch had the outer case break (a weld came loose I think) in about the same timeframe. Also they use some strange screw size in back.. I have a set of small screw drivers for use on watches, and this is the only watch I've ever owned that I was unable to open and change the battery on myself. I don't really know how standard / non-standard that size is, but it threw me.
And coming full circle with the review, I think I've been treated fairly by the company. They replaced the dead battery and replaced the whole watch with the broken case. I think they're honest small-businessmen importing interesting products.
But overall if you're intrigued by the idea of a tungsten carbide watch for its remarkable scratch resistance, I can't recommend biance / le chateau.
