It is NOT really waterproof! Jul 12, 2010 I read the reviews and saw only one complaining that the watch was not really waterproof. It is water resistant, meaning it can withstand rain or splashing. The item description says that it can withstand water to depths of 330 feet. Since I only paid a little over 13 bucks for the watch, I decided to keep it anyway, but Amazon should definitely change the item description. If you are in search of a watch to wear in water, select a different model.
Great watch for the money Jul 07, 2010 It's hard to beat this watch for value for your money - sometimes less is more, and simple is elegant. I've worn this watch to the beach, running, and outside just working around the house and never had a problem. If you've got a cell phone it's hard to justify spending much on a watch, but the price of this watch is so low that cost is not a problem. It's been very water-resistant and durable for me. The only reason I can't give 5 stars is because the alarm could be a little louder; I've never used it as an alarm but I don't think it's loud enough to wake me unless it's right next to my ear. But overall it's a great watch; the only time you'll need another is when eventually (many years) the watch band breaks or the battery dies (it's probably cheaper to just buy a new one than to replace the battery).
It just won't die. Jun 15, 2010 I've owned Casio watches for more years than I can remember. I got my first Illuminator when I was a poor student and just needed to get to work and class on time. I have more expensive watches these days, but I keep coming back to the cheap, old Illuminator.
Some people have remarked that it is smaller than they imagined, I believe they may be confusing it with the much larger G-shock series, also by Casio. The Illuminator is normal, while the G-shock is over-sized (and priced).
Though the G-shock is 'tougher', the Illuminator will probably last longer without needing trips to the factory. I bought the G-shock about eight years ago, and it needs a trip to the factory for a fresh battery every two years. After four trips ($60 a trip), I could have bought a NEW G-shock by now. By contrast, the Illuminator I bought ten years ago worked without problems (or new batteries) for darn near the full decade. Sure, I can't go diving with it, but I don't often find myself under 50m of water, anyway. You can take it swimming and do the dishes with it, though. The Illuminator is also more versatile. I can wear it to work or play, while I can't really wear the G-shock with a suit (some people do, but I find it makes them look like teenagers at the prom).
The band will be the first thing to go. When it does, I'll get a no-name replacement and change it myself. One way to make the original one last longer is- when you first take it out of the box, put it on and adjust it to your normal size, then loosen it one notch and always wear it there. The constant flexing of your wrist is what breaks the strap, if it's loose, that won't happen.
Can't beat the price and it just won't die.
This is a great, reliable watch May 08, 2010 I've been wearing these watches for about 15-20 years; the watch itself seems to last forever, but eventually it's the band that finally ends up breaking after 2-3 years. My boyfriend turned me on to this watch originally; he wore one and told me that, if I ever tried one out, I'd never want to go back to an expensive/fancy watch again. I was skeptical, but he was right! I've been wearing this brand/model ever since and am thrilled that I can still find it on Amazon (Target seems to have stopped carrying them.) I think this particular Casio is better described as a "unisex" rather than strictly a "man's" watch; it has a slim, unbulky construction, classic design/styling, & an adjustable wristband to fit any normal-sized man or woman. It's well-made, sturdy, keeps accurate time, truly water-resistant, has a built-in alarm/stopwatch, and lights up at the touch of a button to allow you to check the time in the dark -- all for a price that can't be beat. I rate this product 5 stars for quality, reliability and design. Thank you Casio & Amazon...please keep making/carrying this watch!
Value Apr 19, 2010 You can't get a better watch for less than $15 dollars. Its small, slim and with 12 eyelets can fit any small to medium size wrist. It's a very simple, easy to use watch and the illumination function works excellent, although it doesn't "light up a room" like some reviewers claim. The watch is water resistant so it can take splashes without a problem. I shower with mine everyday and won't worry about wearing it in the pool this summer. The only improvement I could ask for is a louder alarm. I know it's not designed to wake a person up, but I still wish it could. Design-wise, well, it's nothing great. I like it, but I like nerdy things.
