Description

Luminox Tech: All Luminox watches must undergo additional manufacturing steps that other watches do not require. The Luminox self-powered illumination system must be installed into each and every watch. It is a costly and time consuming endeavor but it is what makes Luminox watches special. It is our raison d'être. Each watch employs tiny self-powered micro gas lights developed by the world leader in the luminous compound industry. These micro gas lights (borosilicate glass capsules) are installed into the hands, hour markers, and when necessary, bezels of our watches. Luminox watches need no external light source to "charge" the paint on the dial or hands in order to glow as do conventional luminous watches. Nor do they require the push of a button to light the dial as do watches with electroluminescence. The U.S. military has long recognized the advantages of micro gas light sources and their use is specified in procurement specification MIL-W-46374F. Our self-powered illumination-Luminox Light Technology (LLT) allows one to view time-at-a-glance, no matter what the light level, even in complete darkness. This ease of being able to read time effortlessly seems to fill a need for various military and law enforcement groups. It is why the U.S. Navy SEALs Procurement officers came to us asking us to create dive watches for them for night missions. It is also why U.S. Air Force pilots flying the F-117 NighthawkTM Stealth Jets asked the same of us. These are only two of many groups of "heroes" that truly understand and appreciate the inherent benefit of wearing a Luminox timepiece.

3Nice, basic watch  Dec 23, 2010 By Ticktocker
I am a watch collector and have been wanting the 1822 for quite some time now. I have 3 other Luminox watches and the 1822 seemed like a great, simple watch that I could wear all day without even thinking about it. I received it 5 days ago so take my review with that in mind.

The negatives: My first impression was that the watch is much larger than 42mm. It's more around the 47-49mm range. That disappointed me since I do not like large watches at all. Maybe it's the fact that there is no bezel at all and that makes it look bigger than it really is.
The case and bracelet have rough edges (which to me denotes a lack of refinement and quality that my other Luminox watches have) that can dig into your wrist, depending on how sensitive you are to rough edges.
The bracelet is not what I expected. It seems a little light and aluminum-like, instead of that heavy, stainless steel feel of other Luminox watches.
When I unscrewed the crown and pulled it out to set the time, I noticed a loose feeling to the crown and when moving the date and day, I could feel that it does not have that tight, solid feel of other Luminox watches.

The positives: The luminescence is of course, top notch. That is why most would pick a Luminox in the first place and this watch carries on the Luminox tradition of excellent night visibility.
The box and instructions seem well thought out.
The simpleness of the dial is excellent.
Readability is easy in daylight or darkness, being that it is such a large watch.

Keep in mind that it may be that I was unfortunate enough to get a watch that is "off" a bit when it comes to what you are likely to get but it was a surprise since every other Luminox experience has been flawless. Things like a bracelet with sharp edges that feels lighter and with less quality of other bracelets may not be important to you. Or a crown that feels loose. If they are not important, this is a great watch. It seems to be keeping time right to the second since the day I got it and set it to the atomic clock and the second hand lines up with the minute markers perfectly.

As far as value is concerned....... any watch that uses tritium gas tubes is going to have a big mark up in price. If the watch is a good seller, the mark up may be even bigger. This is a best seller for Luminox and they fly off the shelves so what I paid may be a good price considering what the watch has. I think a lower price tag would justify my overall experience with this watch. I paid just under $300 and I think if it would have been under $200, I would have received what I paid for.

1Second try at Luminox, even worse than the first  Oct 30, 2010 By Ryan P. Joseph "fishrule85"
I bought this watch to replace a fabric band Navy Seal Luminox watch I had that literally fell apart in less than two years. I really liked how it glowed in the dark though, so I decided to give Luminox another shot. What a mistake, this one stopped working after two days, let alone two months. The store I bought it from gave me a new one, and guess what? Yup, it broke after two weeks. I returned it, got my money back, and bought a Seiko.

2cheap watch!  Oct 30, 2010 By Tobias Ralph Boisvert
This is a VERY cheap watch. I was looking for an everyday sturdy watch that keeps good time and after tons of reading bought this one. The movement doesnt stay sinked. I reset it several times and and after a few minutes the minute hand starts falling behind the second hand. My last inexpensive watch was a Seiko and i just wanted something different. I wish i had stuck with Seiko. I will not buy another Luminox watch. As for the military buying these you should remember the military doesn't buy the best product. The military buys from the lowest bidder. This watch should be priced under a $100. Oh well i took a shot.....

5Wow  May 25, 2010 By dagus 1976 "dagus 1976"
No website I could find had pictures that shows just how pretty this watch really is. I just bought mine today and am totally impressed. This watch is so well built, it will probably last 20 years. The stainless steel bracelet is thick and chunky. Surgical grade stainless.

This watch really has it all. Sapphire crystal, screw down crown, day and date, safety clasp, anti-reflective coating and built like a tank. Can't think of any watch in this price range that is this nice with all these features. Love it. Highly recommended.

3decent watch - they could fix a few things  Dec 03, 2011 By k4nh
I just purchased this watch and I like it. The night-time illumiation is the best part. Things I don't like are the sharp edges on the under lugs and the band (no sharp edges on watches people!). Also the second hand doesn't line up with the lines as it moves around the dial. It keeps good time and seems pretty rugged. If those things were fixed I would have given it more stars.
