| | Description | Orient Watch was formally established in July 13th, 1950 in Tokyo. However, the history of Orient Watch really dates back to 1901, when Shogoro Yoshida, the founder of Orient, opened a wholesale watch store in Ueno, Japan. Orient Watch has always focused on mechanical watches, primarily automatic watches with its own in-house automatic movements Orient was once part of the "Big Three" watch companies in Japan along with Citizen and Seiko. In the 70s, when mechanical watch companies faced hardship from the mass introduction of inexpensive quartz watches, Citizen and Seiko took the path of mass producing quartz watches, Orient stuck with what it did best, making mechanical watches. Today, Seiko owns a controlling stake in Orient. Orient, however, continues to make its own mechanical movements. For its quartz models, it uses Seiko's quartz movements. What sets Orient apart from other watch companies is really the fact that Orient has always been focusing on making its mechanical movements better and more reliable. It is unusual today to find a watch company that makes its own movement selling watches at prices offered by Orient. Most of the watch companies that do make in-house movements are big name specialized watch companies such as Patek Philippe whose watches ranges from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. To find a specialized watch company that uses in-house movements selling its watches at prices that are affordable to most people is truly refreshing. | |

Nice but... Apr 01, 2012
By HankW The watch looks rather nice but not enthused with the overall quality. The band is rather light weight and the material is pretty thin. I was almost afraid to damage the the band when I was trying to take out the links to adjust the band for my wrist size especially when the links were pretty hard to take apart. Now for the accuracy of the watch - after about a week, I am losing about 10 seconds a day. Not what I was expecting from an Orient watch. Hopefully it will improve on accuracy as I figure which is the best position to lay my watch down when not in use and as I wear it more often to ensure that it is fully wound. I have a Seiko 5 that only loses about 2.5 seconds a day and my 9 year old Citizen automatic only loses about 4 to 5 seconds a day. The Orient, like my other 2 watches and most Japanese automatics, does not have a hack mechanism so trying to set the watch to exact time is not possible. Then again, who really cares that you are off by several seconds given that the watch's time is going to drift anyways once you set the time. Both the Seiko 5's &s26 and Orient 46E watch movements have 21,600 oscillations per hour (equating to 6 beats pr second) and the second hand sweeps with a perceivable jagged sweep whereas my Citizen's 8200 caliber also has 21,600 oscillations per hour but has a much smoother sweep - more like watches with 8 beats per second. I would only like having a hack mechanism to synch up the watch to NIST time for ease of checking accuracy. So, is it worth $99 (~$90 + ~9 shipping)? Not in my opinion given that my Seiko 5 is of much higher quality/better built and keeps a better time but can be had for $30 less.
