| | Description | About Orient: Orient Watch was formally established in July 13th, 1950 in Tokyo. However, the history of Orient Watch really dates back to 1901, when Shogoro Yoshida, the founder of Orient, opened a wholesale watch store in Ueno, Japan. Orient Watch has always focused on mechanical watches, primarily automatic watches with its own in-house automatic movements Orient was once part of the "Big Three" watch companies in Japan along with Citizen and Seiko. In the 70s, when mechanical watch companies faced hardship from the mass introduction of inexpensive quartz watches, Citizen and Seiko took the path of mass producing quartz watches, Orient stuck with what it did best, making mechanical watches. Today, Seiko owns a controlling stake in Orient. Orient, however, continues to make its own mechanical movements. For its quartz models, it uses Seiko's quartz movements. What sets Orient apart from other watch companies is really the fact that Orient has always been focusing on making its mechanical movements better and more reliable. It is unusual today to find a watch company that makes its own movement selling watches at prices offered by Orient. Most of the watch companies that do make in-house movements are big name specialized watch companies such as Patek Philippe whose watches ranges from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. To find a specialized watch company that uses in-house movements selling its watches at prices that are affordable to most people is truly refreshing. | |

This is an elegant and beautiful watch. It is lovely to look at, and quite easily to adjust as necessary. This is the second automatic watch I have owned, and this one seems to keep time better and stay working longer (when it's not on my wrist). I've read about the Orient brand--one of Japan's top three who stayed with the automatic when the others went to battery operation--and perfected it. It does seem true!
It is a bit larger face than I would prefer, but it is the size of most fashionable watches today. It is also rather thick, which is due to the automatic mechanism. Neither of these are a drawback, really, but may want to be taken into consideration.

One could say that if Swiss watches are the equivalent of European luxury cars, then Orient is the equivalent of a Lexus. However, that would be unfair. This analogy would only be accurate if Lexus made cars that cost five times less than their European counterparts, had a more unique design, and had a 60 year history of distinctive craftsmanship and engineering.
I've been hearing about Orient watches for a while now, very glad they're finally available in the US. I needed a new watch to replace a pretty but wildly inaccurate Stuhrling automatic, but had trouble finding anything decent in my price range. Anyhow, I recently got this watch as a gift, and could not be happier with it!
The watch is large without being comically oversized like so many watches these days. It's very distinctive; I've never seen the same design by another company. Most of the guys I work with wear mall-brand watches which all look alike - compared to them the Orient really stands out! The smooth sweep of the second hand instantly tells you this is an automatic watch, and the large date window really catches the eye. Most importantly, it's accurate within a few seconds per day.
There's a reason why Orient watches are one of the few affordable brands truly respected by watch experts. Almost all other watches in this price range use either quartz movements, or cheap Chinese-made automatic movements (cough, Stuhrling). Orient is one of the very few companies that builds the entire watch, with a high quality in-house automatic movement. This was my first Orient, but definitely won't be my last!
