Description

About Orient: Orient Watch was formally established in July 13th, 1950 in Tokyo. However, the history of Orient Watch really dates back to 1901, when Shogoro Yoshida, the founder of Orient, opened a wholesale watch store in Ueno, Japan. Orient Watch has always focused on mechanical watches, primarily automatic watches with its own in-house automatic movements Orient was once part of the "Big Three" watch companies in Japan along with Citizen and Seiko. In the 70s, when mechanical watch companies faced hardship from the mass introduction of inexpensive quartz watches, Citizen and Seiko took the path of mass producing quartz watches, Orient stuck with what it did best, making mechanical watches. Today, Seiko owns a controlling stake in Orient. Orient, however, continues to make its own mechanical movements. For its quartz models, it uses Seiko's quartz movements. What sets Orient apart from other watch companies is really the fact that Orient has always been focusing on making its mechanical movements better and more reliable. It is unusual today to find a watch company that makes its own movement selling watches at prices offered by Orient. Most of the watch companies that do make in-house movements are big name specialized watch companies such as Patek Philippe whose watches ranges from tens of thousands of dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars. To find a specialized watch company that uses in-house movements selling its watches at prices that are affordable to most people is truly refreshing.

5Stunning blue watch!  Aug 13, 2010 By Henry Haslebacher "Doktor Z"
I've bought Orient watches before and had good luck. I was looking at watches because one can never have too many. I decided I wanted a square/rectangular case model. I was looking at this one and noticed The Wide-Calendar was interesting. I saw that the blue model was considerably cheaper than the black or white face model so I took a chance. Besides, I've never had a blue watch before.

The watch arrived a few weeks ago. When Orient calls this a "Wide-Calendar" watch, they aren't kidding. It is big! I didn't quite expect it to be that size but I like it. The blue is not nearly so black-looking as it appears online. The color is very attractive. I particularly like the face. Very stylish, particularly the magnifier portion of the crystal. The date and day jump out at you. The curved case and crystal are also a very distinctive touch.

Despite its size, the watch is not heavy to wear as some diver models are. The band is comfortable and quite compatible in appearance with the rest of the watch.

As for accuracy, it's pretty typical of a self-winding watch. It gains 5-10 seconds per day. You can adjust this somewhat by laying the watch on the edge opposite the crown overnight and it will be pretty much right by morning. To me that's part of the charm of a mechanical watch. If you want super accuracy, buy a Timex or Casio. (I have them too but I always end up wearing my mechanical watches.)While you can't hack the second hand as with more expensive mechanical movements, if you let it run down, you can stop or reverse the second hand with the crown by turning the hands counterclockwise and adjust it to an atomic clock to set the seconds.

In summary, it's a good looking watch, it looks much more expensive than it is, it's reasonably accurate for a relatively inexpensive mechanical movement, and it has a day/date display like no other watch.

3Blingingly spectacular but not great  May 04, 2012 By Caxton
CEVAD002D:
Large blue faced rectangular watch (40mm wide including crown:15mm deep:92g)
Movement: 46E
Features - pros
Sweep second hand
Large Arabic numerals 12, 3 and 9; 5 minute indices elsewhere
Date in window at 6 position; day in full in wide window beneath date
No power reserve indicator
Stainless steel broad rectangular bezel
Curved mineral crystal with magnified day/date window
Single conventional crown
50m water resistant
Blue leather band
Designation EVAD-CO CS
Serial number: 970497
Description on face: Japan TH EVAD-A00 T
Accuracy: loses 6-10 seconds/day

Cons:
Relatively inaccurate Orient watch
Doesn't hack (as for all Orient automatics at this level)
Second hand hard to read
Minute hand hard to place accurately
Poor lume performance (vs Citizens and Seikos)

Summary:
I bought the watch from Amazon and it arrived well within schedule.
This watch stands out. Some friends admired it, others thought the domed crystal too blingy.
My main criticisms are that it loses rather than gains and that the domed glass makes the second hand very hard to read.
The best feature is the full day of the week at the bottom; perfect for first thing in the morning even if the watch is a minute or two out.
I will wear it as the occasion demands, probably in the evening.

4Fun blue watch.  Jan 17, 2012 By W. H. Jamison, Jr.
I'm a big fan of automatic watches because they don't need batteries. You can set one aside and not wear it for a few months and all you have to do to start wearing it again is set it to the correct time and give it a shake to get the movement going. I've had Seiko automatic dive watches and had heard good things about Orient so I decided to give them a try and buy this watch. This is a big watch. It's bigger than my Seiko automatic dive watch, but despite the size it's not heavy and is comfortable to wear. The blue of the watch face is lighter than shown in the picture and is much better looking. The band is also lighter than shown in the picture. It is a blue leather band with an alligator pattern stamped into it. I replaced this with a plain brown leather band from Hadley Roma and the watch looks great. My only complaint with the watch is the lume on the hands and numerals. It's barely functional and might as well not even be there, the only way I've been able to get it to work at all is to hold it under a UV flashlight, which makes it glow, weakly, for a few minutes, before it fades. Doing this to my Seiko watches supercharges the lume so that it glows for hours. If this watch had a bright blue lume to go with the face it would be a five star item. If you want a fun and stylish watch that stands out this is a good buy.

1Date display failed after a month, support of network in the DR is awful  Jan 11, 2010 By Tolete "Tolete"
A month after purchase, the date display failed, I went to Casa Tonos, wich is the Orient network rep. in the D.R.
First I shall quote what is written in this watch warranty book(I'm writting it from memory, as in in the office and left the book at home): In case of any building defect pls. refer to seller or any of our network reps. When I check the rep in D.R. I decided to go there.

The guys over there just told me that they just guarantee watches they sell, and that I should, claim the guarantee to the seller.

For failing a month after purchase, and for the lousy international support:

Don't buy these B.S.
