| | Description | SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. Please note that all these movements beat at a rate of 21'600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). As a comparison, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28'800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21'600 bph. Why do I mention these three movements? Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic wrist watches. A market share that is huge, yet challenged these days (2006) by an increasing share of inexpensive China Made automatic movements An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time. | |

Nice Looking!! No Battery to Replace, Ever! May 29, 2008
By Peter Venkman, PhD This is a great watch. The box it comes in is rather nice; the watch itself is attached to a little pillow like some more expensive watches.
The case looks more expensive than it is. The back of the watch is covered in a mineral crystal so that the inner workings are clear. You can see the jewels and the little weight that moves around to wind the mainspring.
The watch itself is made in Japan but the band is made in China and is rather thin and pulls the hair off my wrist from time to time. The mineral crystal on the front is nice and thick. Being a purely mechanical watch, it is a bit on the heavy side but after wearing it for a week I quickly got used to the heft. I like that the dial markers glow in the dark along with the hour and minute hands. It is not as accurate as a quartz watch but a quick check of the time when removing it at night keeps it on time.
The day display is in both English and Spanish. It took a while to get it to just display the English days.
Apparently, Seiko has been making this watch for over forty years. It is targeted for parts of the world that might have trouble getting batteries. (Refer to my other review about the Seiko Perpetual Calendar watch)
Besides the cheap band, this watch is highly recommended.
Great price for a great every day watch. Jul 01, 2011
By Jeffrey Burnett I wear slacks and dress shirts to work and I use this as my "every day" watch. It's dressy enough to wear with a suit, but not so snobby that I can't wear it with shorts and a t-shirt. I love automatic watches, so this was a no brainer for me.
good watch at a reasonable price Oct 14, 2010

The price was the main attraction for me, as well as the mechanical self-winding mechanics. The day/date offers english and spanish days. The watch is accurate and reliable, although it may respond badly to actually being taken in the shower or dropped onto hard surfaces. The self-winding is effective, and is visible through the back of the watch - it has a transparent cover to the case.
Seiko 5 mans watch Jul 14, 2010
By Michael Canant The Seiko 5, 21 jewel watch is a very good watch for the price. It is well built, ver accurate (when it is running), and very attractive.
I have only had it for a month, the I feel that it will last a long time. It does have a few negative issues. First, the bracelet band is quite small. This is supposed to be a mans watch, but the bracelet was made for a rather small man, I think. Compounding this, is the design of the case brackets where the bracelet attaches. The width of the band decreases from around 22mm down to 10mm. This makes it impossible to bur an aftermarket leather strap. I ended up buying a 22mm strap and cutting it with a razor blade, both width and length, to get thelooped part of the strap to align with the pin spring holes. The Seiko dealers that I contacted about this were not helpful at all. My only other issue would be that the watch winds down fairly quickly, if you don't wear it. I am getting about 18 hours from the time I take it off, to the time it stops. But as I said, this is still a good watch for the money, if you have small wrists.
seiko 5 selfwinding watch model snka19k1 Nov 15, 2009
By K. Nicholas Leibovic i have only had the watch for a month or so. it seems to be reliable and to be a quality watch as one would expect from a seiko. it is not particularly cheap for what it is. the winding knob is too small to be conveniently handled and it only displays the day and date, not the month.
