| | Description | SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. Please note that all these movements beat at a rate of 21'600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). As a comparison, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28'800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21'600 bph. Why do I mention these three movements? Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic wrist watches. A market share that is huge, yet challenged these days (2006) by an increasing share of inexpensive China Made automatic movements An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time. | |

By nklchitap the watch is ok and easy to adjust, but we have had trouble with it stopping and not keeping time regularly, which is, after all, what a watch should do. it's past the 10-day return time for us so we're taking it to a repair shop, but still annoying that a somewhat new product just stops working as regularly as it does. We also only received paperwork for the seller, not the manufacturer, and no directions on how to adjust it etc. but it was easy enough to figure out with some patience.
nice feature though: lists days of the week in english and spanish.

Seiko 5 Automatic Sep 03, 2011
By Brian A disclaimer for future buyers: This is an automatic watch, not a quartz(battery powered)
I received this watch last week and it is functioning as hoped.
The watch itself is beautiful. I was looking closely at Hamilton for my first automatic watch. However, once I heard about Seiko 5 I was intrigued because of the lower prices. I found this model (which resembles the Tag Heuer Carrera) and decided to order it.
Winding was simple, just move your wrist for a few seconds and the watch will begin ticking.
I have not focused closely on the precise accuracy of the watch. However, I have not noticed any significant change from when I first set it (it is definitely LESS than +/- 10 seconds a day)
The only small gripe I have about the watch is the band. I do not like that fact that the links are not solid.

Fraudulent service AND product! Aug 22, 2011
By R. Meyer I have shopped through Amazon for years, for both business and personal. I purchased this watch as a Christmas gift and have had minimal use due to it being a defective product from the time I received. When I first received, it arrived in a cardboard box, not a Seiko box and no instructions on use. I contacted the Seller and received the box within a couple of weeks but was informed that if I needed instructions on use, I could access on-line. The watch soon stopped working and after alot of unneccessary back and forth communication with this Seller, I returned the watch for repair - per Seller's instruction. Approximately 4 weeks later, I received the watch. I personally wore the watch for one day as I wanted to avoid further embarrassement with the recipent of this gift. After 30 minutes of wear, the watch again stopped working. At that point, my next communication was requesting a full refund or replacement of this product. I was informed by the Seller that a refund was not and option. I again was required and instructed to return the watch for repair and Seller would then determine if repairable, if not - item would be replaced. On 8/18/11, I inquired on the status; on 8/19/11 - Seller notified me that the watch is still under repairs. So eight months from purchase, I still have not received adequate resolution from this Seller. I would NEVER consider any further purchases from this Seller nor would I recommend to anyone!
