| | Description | About Seiko In 1877, at the age of 18, Kintaro Hattori set up business repairing the Western-style clocks that were becoming increasingly popular in Japan. By 1892, Hattori was manufacturing his own clocks in a factory he called Seikosha, from the words "seiko" meaning "exquisite," "success," or "miniature," and "sha" meaning "house." The company grew and prospered, producing its first wristwatch in 1913 and launching the Seiko brand in 1924. Technological innovation has always been a driving force in the company's history. Key milestones include Seiko's introduction of the world's first quartz watch in 1969, and its successful launch, in 1988, of the Kinetic, the world's first battery-free watch with quartz accuracy. Recognized for its technological excellence, Seiko has provided timekeeping services for the Olympic Games and the World Cup Soccer Championships. Today, the Seiko brand continues to stand for state-of-the-art technology, as well as superior quality and refined design. An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time | |

A Keeper Sep 09, 2009
By M. Baker I like this watch more every day. Has all the classic Seiko attributes - efficient, understated and comfortable design, the sleek grey face works beautifully as a visual feature. It has a nice weightiness and that pleasant gyroscopic whirring feel on the wrist. Being an automatic it keeps time by slightly different rules to a battery powered timepiece, but out of the box it is around 10 seconds/day fast which is more than acceptable and easy to deal with. This was my first online watch purchase so I researched before buying. It seems the model I bought was intended for the Asian market only and I was somewhat concerned by the official Seiko message about authorised online sellers, but in Australia "5" series watches retail for around AU$350 to 425 so I took a chance. Allowing for the AU$60 postage from Texas I paid AU$160 for the watch. Has been working great for around a month now and am very satisfied with the transaction.

Very elegant watch + good buying experience = satisfied customer! Feb 22, 2010
By N Very nice watch. Display/dial is easy to read.
Day & date clear (I didnt see another model that showed day and date in separate windows - makes it easy to read). Also, the numbers light up in the dark because they are coated, I understand.
I read somewhere that self-winding watches slow down if not worn for > 8 or 10 hours. So far, I havent see it (I have had this watch now for about 10 days.)
One little bump I ran into was that the first jeweler I went to didnt know how to take some of the links out of the wrist strap - and they actually sell Seiko watches. The second jeweler did, but it took 2 trips to that jeweler before it was a good fit. [Why dont they design the straps so we can adjust it at home with eye-glass screw-drivers?]
Also, the instructions come in a small fold-out page; no manual.
On account of the above two points: the 4-star rating, not "5".
On the plus side: the watch came in a elegant (leather-covered?) box. Very nice.
The supplier (K.G. Company) packed this item very well and it was delivered on time. However, note that if you get free shipping from them, if you have to return it, you pay to ship it back + a $10 restocking fee.
All said and done, a very nice watch at a very reasonable price and a good buying experience. Would definitely recommend.
