| | Description | SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. Please note that all these movements beat at a rate of 21'600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). As a comparison, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28'800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21'600 bph. Why do I mention these three movements? Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic wrist watches. A market share that is huge, yet challenged these days (2006) by an increasing share of inexpensive China Made automatic movements An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time | |

Excellent automatic watch at everyday price. Jul 24, 2010 I have many automatic watches. To me they are just more interesting than quartz models. This Seiko had my attention for a year before I bought it. It is a great value and I enjoy wearing it for everyday activities.
Mine has kept perfect time since I bought it. It has no visible scratches on it and looks as nice as the day I bought it. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is the adjustment of the band. I have not figured it out yet and may have to take it to the local jeweler. Seiko should include some instructions detailing the adjustment procedure. I am just wearing it a little loose right now.
A beautiful automatic with a glass back for aprox. $80. Highly recommend.
Glad I bought this Jul 17, 2010 My wife and I are watch lovers. I wanted a nice automatic that could be versatile...wear at work, casual occasions or dress occasions. This one fills that requirement very well.
It uses Seiko's inexpensive but very durable automatic movement...no hacking or manual wind, but powers up just fine with wear. The lack of hacking makes for a little more difficulty if you are trying to match the time exactly to another watch...minor issue though and not considered a fault...its just how the movement is designed.
The lume is very good...hard to beat a Seiko for quality of lume. Glows plenty bright enough to see through the night.
The case back is transparent so you can watch the movement at work...its not decorated in any way but nonetheless interesting to watch.
The case is 38mm, nicely polished and solidly built. The bracelet is fine...definitely not high end but comfortable and should last a good long time with normal wear (depending on how you define normal).
Amazon states WR rating at 330' or 100m. The actual rating is 30m which is fine for hand washing, rain and if you forget to take it off before a shower that should not be a problem. Dont go diving with it though.
The blue dial is a nice deep blue...the hour markers are applied very well. The hands are long enough...may not seem like something to notice, but have you ever seen watches with hands that dont even come close to reaching the hour markers? Looks bad and is annoying...this watch does not have that problem...great job on the hands.
Accuracy is ok...for the few days I have had this one it has lost about 15 seconds...not spectacular but decent. Automatics can be "luck of the draw"...same movement from the same company in the same model and range from +/- 1 second a day to +/- 30 seconds a day or more. Fortunately if you get one that has bad accuracy, you local qualified watchmaker can probably regulate it for you quickly and cheaply.
The crystal is hardlex...which I assume is their name for a mineral crystal. It can scratch although it is pretty rare that I scratch a crystal and not a major concern.
The crown is push/pull, takes a little effort to pull out and it is small. On one hand it is a little difficult to manipulate it for setting time and date, on the other hand the small size and effort it takes to pull out is a real advantage as there is no worry about it getting caught on something and accidentally pulling out and compromising water resistance.
Amazon has good prices on these watches and at this price I used the one day shipping option...I have always found Amazon very reliable and safe to order from.
Excellent Watch! Jul 05, 2010 The watch is exactly as described on the page. Is slick for an automatic and very light to carry. The flourescent dials on the night are a nice touch.

Seiko is good but this watch isn't. Jul 01, 2010 Seiko makes tough & durable self-winding watches but this watch is quite small. More looks like a ladies watch in my opinion. Second, I couldn't even tell the watch had a blue dial. And third, it's NOT made in Japan. Seiko does not market Japanese made watches in the US, only in Japan. Remember that...
BTW, Amazon took a whole week to process my order and was not able to cancel it.
Returned it.
I love this watch !! May 15, 2010
I had one of these about forty years ago until it was stolen. I have been looking for another one ever since and now I own two of 'em :-)
