| | Description | SEIKO 5 - the meaning of the "5" A great marketer had the idea in the 70ies: to be a SEIKO 5, the watch has to have the following 5 (five) attributes (thus the name SEIKO 5): 1. Automatic, 2. Water resistant, 3. Shock resistant, 4. Date, 5. Day. Please note that some SEIKO 5's are in fact SEIKO 4's, if the "Day" function is omitted, then the Caliber 7S25 is used. The only difference to the normally found 7S26 is the omission of the day wheel. Also re-issues of SEIKO 5 Sports often use the 7S36 caliber. Again the 7S36 is similar to the most popular 7S26, yet it features 23 Jewels as opposed to the 21 Jewels in the 7S26. Please note that all these movements beat at a rate of 21'600 bph (beats per hour) or 6 bps (beats per second). As a comparison, an ETA 2824-2 beats at 28'800 bph or 8 bps. A Miyota 82xx beats at 21'600 bph. Why do I mention these three movements? Because they are found in probably 80% of all inexpensive automatic wrist watches. A market share that is huge, yet challenged these days (2006) by an increasing share of inexpensive China Made automatic movements An automatic watch (also called a self-winding watch) is a mechanical watch, typically with a balance wheel escapement, whose mainspring is wound by the motion of the wearer's arm, instead of having to be wound manually every day. Whereas a quartz watch is powered by electricity, a mechanical watch is powered by a mainspring which must be rewound for the watch to keep time | |

Very Good Value for Money Dec 02, 2009
By Aria Wenda I got this very same watch last week and I could not be happier with this.
At such price, you are getting an automatic mechanical watch from a reputable company (i.e.: Seiko). This watch comes with an ion plated (black) bracelet and bezel. It has a screw down crown as well as a neat feature called the map meter. Water resistance is rated at 200m but I would not use this watch for water sport activity anyway. It fits my small wrist of 6.5" nicely and I am sure this watch will fit bigger wrist too.
This is not a light watch. It weights more than 200g and you can feel that the construction is solid.
The movement comes without manual winding and hacking function but the automatic winding is very efficient on this movement. Accuracy is about +8 secs a day.
As for the compass, I have no use for that as I don't live in Northern nor Southern hemisphere.
My only complain is the plastic part near the crown and map meter... they just looks so cheap and I would prefer they use stainless steel for that portion anyway. If this watch comes in Titanium, I am sure it will appeal to more buyers.
built like a tank Apr 19, 2012
By Erik Fichtner I've had this watch since September 2009. I wear it pretty much every day. as with all automatics, there's a great variation in movement precision; mine runs a pretty consistent -17sec/day (ouch!) since I got it, and it's finally reaching the age where it needs to take a trip to my watchsmith to get that worked out.
The case and particularly the band are 5 star quality. It's heavy, but utterly indestructible. I am *hard* on watches, and in the 2.5 years of daily wear, the only damage is one scratch to the crystal (impact to the corner of a granite countertop), mysterious loss of the little yellow arrow on the map-meter wheel cover, and minor burnishing of the black PVD coating on the band.
The map meter is utterly useless in the continental US, though. I have never seen a 1:50 map, and I'm planning to have my watchsmith replace that ring with one marked for 1:24 topo maps.
It loses a star in rating just because the map meter is currently pointless and it's been -17sec, otherwise it's perfect, and is my daily knock-around watch that I don't worry about getting wet, cold, dirty, scratched, etc...
